Loftis: A Future Scholar Plan Offers a Great Deal of Flexibility

Can money saved in a 529 plan be used to pay for graduate school? And what about attending school overseas? Can 529 funds be used to pay for tuition at many universities outside the country?

“The good news is, a Future Scholar 529 College Savings Plan offers a great deal of flexibility,” said S.C. Treasurer Curtis Loftis.

In fact, as Loftis goes on to explain, those who save using a Future Scholar account can use their savings for any program – graduate or undergraduate programs, as long as it’s at an eligible educational institution.

In addition, if your child decides to attend a college overseas, the same rule applies. Future Scholar funds can be used for any qualified international institution.

“When you pair the plan’s flexibility with its tremendous tax advantages, a Future Scholar account really is the smart, easy way to save for college,” Loftis said.
