Successful Unclaimed Property Day at the State House

03 08 17 UPP Day 1

Columbia, SC - The Unclaimed Property Program had a successful Unclaimed Property Day at the South Carolina State House Wednesday.

Staff from the Treasurer's office were there to help legislators learn about unclaimed property, and see how much unclaimed property was in their districts.

"It's great to see legislators learning how they can help return money to their constituents," said Treasurer Loftis. "We have $550 million in unclaimed funds, and it belongs to the people of South Carolina. Legislators can help out their communities by helping return unclaimed property."

Examples of the types of property turned over to the Unclaimed Property Program include bank accounts, stock and mutual fund shares, payroll checks, insurance policy proceeds and utility deposits. With the exception of U.S. Savings Bonds, the Unclaimed Property Program does not include tangible property such as land or vehicles.
