S.C. Treasurer Curtis Loftis Celebrates National Unclaimed Property Day
January 31, 2025

COLUMBIA, S.C. – In observance of February 1 being National Unclaimed Property Day, State Treasurer Curtis Loftis announced today that more than 800,000 new properties have been reported to the State’s Unclaimed Property Program.
“Approximately 1 in 7 Americans have unclaimed property, and I am reminding South Carolinians to check their names to see if any of these new properties belong to them,” explained Treasurer Loftis. “It’s our job to return those funds to the rightful owners, which include individuals, businesses, charities, schools and other organizations. It’s easy to check our website to see if we have funds waiting for you.”
Each year millions of dollars are sent to State Treasurers’ Office from across the country by companies and entities that cannot locate the rightful owners. The State Treasurer’s Office acts as custodian of those funds until those owners can be located. Currently, the State Treasurer’s Office has more than $950 million in unclaimed property for individuals, businesses and organizations across the state. Some examples of unclaimed property include dormant bank accounts, uncashed checks, unclaimed insurance proceeds and forgotten utility deposits.
Since Treasurer Loftis took office in 2011, almost $400 million has been returned to South Carolinians – more than three times the amount of all previous State Treasurer’s combined.
“Getting these funds back to the rightful owners has been a priority of mine since 2011, and I continue to be humbled by the people who share their stories about how these funds have changed their lives for the better.”
