State Treasurer Curtis Loftis Presents South Carolina Family with $529 PalmettoBaby Grant

Holly and Joseph Goshorn of Greer welcomed their third child, Maxwell, early Tuesday morning at Greenville’s Patewood Memorial Hospital. Just a few hours later, the family was greeted by State Treasurer Curtis Loftis with an amazing gift for baby Maxwell – a privately-funded $529 Future Scholar PalmettoBaby grant.

The newborn’s arrival on May 29, National 529 Day, enabled the family to qualify for the Future Scholar PalmettoBaby Grant Program.

The sixth annual PalmettoBaby Grant Program celebrates National 529 Day and promotes college savings. Through the program, all babies born in South Carolina on May 29, 2018, are designated as PalmettoBabies and are
eligible to apply for a $529 grant when their families enroll in a Future Scholar college savings plan by Aug. 31, 2018.

“The Goshorns know the value of 529 college savings plans as their two older sons already have Future Scholar accounts,” Treasurer Loftis said. “Maxwell’s PalmettoBaby grant, along with his family’s contributions, will help him save for his college education and avoid the staggering debt that so many South Carolinians face.”

Holly said having her children attend college was an important goal for the couple, as neither parent was able to complete their college education. With all three children now having Future Scholar accounts, that dream comes closer to reality.

“529 Day is a great reminder that saving early for a child’s education is one of the most meaningful gifts parents and families can make,” Treasurer Loftis added.

The PalmettoBaby Grant Program is held on May 29 (5/29) in recognition of National 529 College Savings Day. National 529 Day is named for the section in the Internal Revenue code that created 529 plans, which include tax-advantaged savings accounts such as South Carolina’s Future Scholar 529 College Savings Plan.
