State Treasurer Curtis Loftis Recognizes Deanna Shuler of Conway Elementary as Educator of the Month

Deanna Shuler, May Future Scholar Financial Literacy Educator of the Month

South Carolina Treasurer Curtis Loftis recently recognized Conway Elementary School’s Deanna Shuler as May’s Future Scholar Financial Literacy Program Educator of the Month.

“Financial literacy is an essential tool needed to achieve personal financial wellness. Educators like Ms. Shuler are successfully teaching students these skills at a young age, and they are already beginning to make sound financial decisions,” Treasurer Loftis said.

Ms. Shuler, a veteran school counselor with more than 21 years of classroom experience, is using the Future Scholar Financial Literacy Program with third, fourth and fifth grade students. The program, featuring the Vault platform powered by EverFi, is a web-based, interactive curriculum that engages students to make learning financial skills interesting and fun.

“Money is very motivating to students. When we discuss career development, it is always a point of excitement when we discuss salaries,” Shuler explained. “Students connect today’s studies to future career choices and compensation. It is important that they learn early the power of saving a dollar, and these lessons help reinforce the value of making good financial choices.”  

The Future Scholar Financial Literacy Program is offered to elementary and middle schools across the state at no cost to taxpayers. The web-based financial management course focuses on skill building, budgeting and decision-making.

Approximately 30,000 South Carolina students and 267 schools have participated in the Future Scholar Financial Literacy Program since it was launched in 2015.
