State Treasurer Curtis Loftis Recognizes Janet Price of Summit Parkway Middle as Educator of the Year

Today South Carolina Treasurer Curtis Loftis recognized Janet Price of Summit Parkway Middle School in Northeast Columbia as the 2019 Future Scholar Financial Literacy Program Educator of the Year. Loftis visited the school as part of Financial Literacy Month and made the surprise announcement during an assembly with 300 sixth graders who are studying personal finance. 

“For the past four years, Ms. Price has played an important role in sharing information about financial literacy with you students and your teachers,” Treasurer Loftis told the assembly. “She has a real passion and a gift for communicating the value of financial education, and we are grateful that she has shared this enthusiasm with you, the leaders and decision-makers of the future.”

Ms. Price, a career development facilitator at Summit Parkway, uses the Future Scholar Financial Literacy Program as part of the school’s career exploration studies.

“Our principal April Shell recognized the importance of financial literacy and started an exploratory class that allows our students to dive even deeper into personal finance content,” Price explained. “As a result, many of our students are using their financial knowledge to find creative ways to make and save money. We have several students who have turned their passion into income by starting their own businesses.” 

Price will be honored along with 10 other Future Scholar Financial Literacy educators next month at the SC Economics 30^th Annual Economics and Financial Literacy Awards luncheon in West Columbia.

The Future Scholar Financial Literacy Program is offered to elementary and middle schools across the state at no cost to taxpayers. The financial management course uses the Vault platform, powered by EverFi, to teach skill building, budgeting and decision-making. It is a web-based, interactive program that engages students to make learning financial skills interesting and fun.

Approximately 30,000 South Carolina students and 267 schools have participated in the Future Scholar Financial Literacy Program since it was launched in 2015.
