January 24, 2025

COLUMBIA, S.C. (January 24, 2025) – South Carolina Treasurer Curtis Loftis has recognized Berkeley County School District’s Nathaniel Gilmore of Goose Creek High School as the South Carolina Financial Literacy Master Teacher Program’s Educator of the Month for January.
“Financial decision-making is an important part of all our lives. People without a sound financial education often lack a complete understanding of how poor monetary decisions can negatively affect their well-being,” Treasurer Loftis said. “We are thankful for educators like Mr. Gilmore who recognize the value of personal finance education and are passionate about sharing this knowledge with their students and peers.”
Gilmore began his career serving in the U.S. Air Force and held numerous instructional roles at bases across the country, including Fort Dix in New Jersey, Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas, and Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, South Carolina. He has earned multiple degrees, including his Bachelor of Science in Workforce Education/Development from Southern Illinois University, a Master of Science in Administration from Central Michigan University and a Master of Science in Education from Kaplan University. Gilmore has more than thirty years of experience as an educator and a training professional, as well as a manager for federal agencies, civilian contractors and state education departments. He teaches various computer science courses as well as entrepreneurship and other business classes at Goose Creek High School.
“Finance is at the forefront of our society and impacts all of us,” says Gilmore. “The importance of teaching financial literacy cannot be overemphasized. The sooner students are introduced to these concepts and lessons, the more likely they are to embrace this knowledge and make financial decisions that will benefit them in the long run.”
The South Carolina Financial Literacy Master Teacher Program provides incentives to K-12 teachers who are experts in the area of financial literacy and have a desire to teach professional development workshops to other educators in their schools and districts. Through the program participating teachers have access to specialized training and financial literacy curriculum resources that better enable them to promote financial literacy education in K-12 schools.
Sponsored by Future Scholar, South Carolina’s 529 College Savings Plan, and in partnership with SC Economics, this statewide financial literacy initiative aims to increase teacher support and involvement in incorporating personal finance education into the curriculum.
