South Carolina Treasurer Curtis Loftis announced that two high school seniors will be awarded with $529 privately-funded Future Scholar grants as part of a statewide promotion to encourage applying for college.

Kylie Blayne Whitlock, a senior at Gaffney High School, and Whitney Salters, a senior at Whale Branch Early College High School in Seabrook, were chosen from a random drawing of high school students who took part in College Application Day events at their schools this past fall.

“Applying for college is an important event in the lives of many South Carolina teens. Future Scholar is proud to recognize this important milestone and provide grants to these young students as they prepare for their next chapter,” Treasurer Loftis said.

This is the second year that the South Carolina Future Scholar 529 College Savings program has worked in conjunction with the S.C. Commission on Higher Education to provide scholarship opportunities to students who participated in College Application Day.

“This year, the State Treasurer’s Office awarded scholarships to two deserving S.C. seniors who are attending college this fall. These students took the first step by preparing as early as possible and exploring options to pay for college,” said Dr. Karen Woodfaulk, Director of Student Affairs at the S.C. Commission on Higher Education. “One option is our state’s 529 plan which helps students and families pay for college and open the door to post-secondary education.”

Scholarship recipient Kylie Whitlock is ranked in the top 25 percent of her class and has a GPA of 3.912.  She plans on attending Greenville Technical College in the fall to become a dental hygienist.

Beaufort native Whitney Salters is active in her school’s Educational Talent Search, the National Honor Society and the Health Science Nursing Clinical Studies Program, where she has already completed the Certified Nurse Assistant Program. Upon graduation, she plans to attend Trident Tech to complete their two-year dental program.
