Treasurer Curtis Loftis Presents Teen Founder of Charity with Future Scholar Grant

 Myrtle Beach, SC - Treasurer Curtis Loftis recently presented David Linkous, the founder of a non-profit in the Pee Dee, with a privately funded $529 grant for his Future Scholar 529 account. 

Linkous founded David's Blankets of Hope in 2012 at the age of seven. The organization provides fleece blankets to children from birth to 21 months who are facing serious illness, disability or severe injury. David's blankets have been delivered to children throughout South Carolina and the United States, and as far away as England, Canada and Haiti. 

David recently gave away his 1000th blanket to a sick child. The board of David’s Blankets of Hope raised money towards David’s Future Scholar account and Future Scholar was able to provide additional funds to the account.  

Treasurer Loftis presented David with a $529 privately funded grant for this Future Scholar 529 College Savings account.

"It's amazing to see this young man working to help those less fortunate than him," said Treasurer Loftis. "We wanted to reward him for his hard work in helping others. Even though he may not be that excited about the money now since he can't spend it, he'll appreciate it when he's getting ready for college and can take the money tax-free to pay for school."

The Future Scholar 529 college savings plan is a tax-advantaged education savings vehicle that is designed to help make saving for college easier. Future Scholar funds can be used to pay for tuition and qualified higher education expenses at eligible two and four-year public and private colleges, and graduate, professional and certain vocational programs. Future Scholar is the 529 college savings plan sponsored by the State of South Carolina and administered by the Office of State Treasurer, Curtis Loftis.
