COLUMBIA, S.C. – State Treasurer Curtis Loftis announced the launch of a new personal finance lesson plan designed to engage kindergarten through second grade students across the Palmetto State.
Based on the popular coloring book - Lucky Ducky and the Smart Plan, the Lucky Ducky Lesson Plan encourages teachers to lead meaningful discussions with creative activities that are designed to help students learn how financial education, continuous skill development, and goal-setting play a crucial role in personal growth and achievement.
“It’s never too early to learn about the importance of saving money and making smart financial choices,” Treasurer Loftis said of the new lesson plan. “That’s why we developed this interactive lesson plan specifically for our elementary teachers. We want to encourage important financial skills at an earlier age and provide the foundational knowledge that can be expanded upon as students go through school.”
The first 100 K-2 teachers to sign up to implement this lesson plan in their classrooms will receive a special kit with materials that bring the lessons to life and make understanding the concepts easy and fun. The kit includes the Lucky Ducky and the Smart Plan lesson plan, 30 Lucky Ducky and the Smart Plan coloring books, a “Needs vs Wants” piggy bank, and bookmarks for their students. Supplies are limited, so teachers are encouraged to register by Friday, December 13, 2024.
In partnership with SC Economics and through its own Future Scholar 529 College Savings Plan, the State Treasurer’s Office has developed a number of initiatives to expand personal finance instruction in South Carolina, including its successful SC Financial Literacy Master Teacher Program. The Master Teacher Program provides targeted training designed to equip educators with the tools and expertise to increase personal finance lessons in grades K-12.
