State Treasurer Curtis Loftis has recognized Lancaster County School District’s Ashli Sellers of Heath Springs Elementary School as the South Carolina Financial Literacy Master Teacher Program’s Educator of the Month for December.

“The Financial Literacy Master Teacher Program equips our state’s educators with both the resources they need to incorporate financial literacy into their own classrooms and the skills they need to show their peers how to do the same,” said State Treasurer Curtis Loftis. “Because of exceptional master teachers like Ashli Sellers, students are learning the smart money habits they will need to navigate both the economic opportunities and the obstacles of adulthood.”

Sellers is passionate about education and wants to use her skills to help students in South Carolina have a brighter future. She loves teaching 5th grade and in her spare time, enjoys spoiling her dog and watching trivia game shows. Sellers holds a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction and is working towards a doctorate in education.

“Teaching personal finance education is important because students will need these financial skills to thrive when they become adults,” said Sellers. “Students need to know how to budget their money when they start receiving an income. They need to know how to calculate interest. They need to know how to organize their debt. It’s all about maximizing their future income.”

The South Carolina Financial Literacy Master Teacher Program provides incentives to K-12 teachers who are experts in the area of financial literacy and have a desire to teach professional development workshops to other educators in their schools and districts. Through the program participating teachers have access to specialized training and financial literacy curriculum resources that better enable them to promote financial literacy education in K-12 schools.

Sponsored by Future Scholar, South Carolina’s 529 College Savings Plan, and in partnership with SC Economics, this statewide financial literacy initiative aims to increase teacher support and involvement in incorporating personal finance education into the curriculum.
