State Treasurer Curtis Loftis Recognizes Susan Nunamaker of R.C. Edwards Middle School as Educator of the Month

 South Carolina Treasurer Curtis Loftis has recognized The School District of Pickens County’s Dr. Susan Nunamaker of R.C. Edwards Middle School as the South Carolina Financial Literacy Master Teacher Program’s Educator of the Month for March.

“The Financial Literacy Master Teacher Program provides resources, training and support to educators who will ultimately lead workshops for their peers across the state,” said State Treasurer Curtis Loftis. “Master teachers such as Susan Nunamaker are remarkable in their ability to instill fundamental financial literacy habits in their students as well as mentor other educators who seek to do the same.”

Nunamaker began her career as a financial analyst but later decided to follow in the footsteps of both her grandmother and mother by becoming an educator. She currently teaches English as a Second Language and strives to make a difference in the lives of each of her students as they work toward realizing their own American dream. Having earned an undergraduate degree in accounting from Clemson University and a masters in the art of teaching degree from the College of Charleston, Nunamaker also holds an educational specialist degree in administration and supervision from Clemson University and a doctorate in curriculum and instruction from the University of South Carolina. A National Board Certified Teacher, Nunamaker believes that financial literacy serves as the cornerstone for each student’s successful future.

“Financial literacy not only prepares students for financial success in life, it also spills over into core areas to help students understand why they are learning the lessons that we teach,” said Nunamaker. “It gives students tools for the future while also making their learning experience meaningful and relevant.”

The South Carolina Financial Literacy Master Teacher Program provides incentives to K-12 teachers who are experts in the area of financial literacy and have a desire to teach professional development workshops to other educators in their schools and districts. Through the program, participating teachers have access to specialized training and financial literacy curriculum resources that better enable them to promote financial literacy education in K-12 schools.

Sponsored by Future Scholar, South Carolina’s 529 College Savings Plan, and in partnership with SC Economics, this statewide financial literacy initiative aims to increase teacher support and involvement in incorporating personal finance education into the curriculum.
