State Treasurer Curtis Loftis Recognizes Sharon Bennett of Stratford High School as Educator of the Month

South Carolina Treasurer Curtis Loftis has recognized Berkeley County School District’s Sharon Bennett of Stratford High School as the South Carolina Financial Literacy Master Teacher Program’s Educator of the Month for November.

“The Financial Literacy Master Teacher Program is unique in its ability to prepare our state’s educators to teach personal finance lessons to both their students and their fellow educators,” said State Treasurer Curtis Loftis. “I am grateful for remarkable teachers like Sharon Bennett who implement creative strategies to teach smart money habits in the classroom and then share those successful lessons with their peers in professional development workshops.”

A veteran business and technology educator for 23 years, Bennett received a bachelor’s degree in organizational management from Voorhees College and a master’s degree in education with a specialization in instructional design from Capella University. Last May, she completed her second master’s degree in administration and supervision from Liberty University. A recipient of the President’s Bronze Volunteer Service award, Bennett currently serves on the St. Matthews Town Council.

“It is vital that students get an early start on managing their finances, so their financial health is positive, and they are globally competitive,” said Bennett. “I enjoy teaching my students strategies for financial management, decision-making about credit and banking, and how to make confident, informed choices about insurance, financial aid for school, and other major life decisions.”

The South Carolina Financial Literacy Master Teacher Program provides incentives to K-12 teachers who are experts in the area of financial literacy and have a desire to teach professional development workshops to other educators in their schools and districts. Through the program participating teachers have access to specialized training and financial literacy curriculum resources that better enable them to promote financial literacy education in K-12 schools.

Sponsored by Future Scholar, South Carolina’s 529 College Savings Plan, and in partnership with SC Economics, this statewide financial literacy initiative aims to increase teacher support and involvement in incorporating personal finance education into the curriculum.
